Year 5 Kestrels and Hawks
Weekly Notices (Summer 2 Week 5)
Good Morning Kestrels and Hawks! This is where you can find all your different learning activities for the week, with some notes to let you know what you should be learning!
You have all been set a weekly assignment on Reading Eggs and Times Tables Rock Stars, as well as assignments on Khan Academy that will run alongside the Maths learning for that week/fortnight when this is deemed appropriate.
Reading Eggs/Reading Eggspress: For Reading Eggs, you will have a reading comprehension activity and a spelling activity. Both of these challenges will 'go live' on a Sunday and you will have until the following Saturday to complete them. This week's challenges go live on Sunday 28th June.
Times Table Rock Stars: For Times Tables Rocks Stars, you have been assigned a schedule of times tables to work through each week in the teacher-set Garage area. These challenges will 'go live' on a Sunday and you will have until the following Saturday to complete them. This week's challenges go live on Sunday 28th June.
Khan Academy: To run alongside our recent learning around area and percentage and measuring angles, you have been assigned the Measuring angles and Area and perimeter units. Each unit has a few videos to watch, a few activities to complete, and a short quiz at the end of the unit. These challenges 'go live' on a Wednesday and you will have a two week window to complete them. The current assignments, Intro to percents and Percent, decimal, fraction conversions, will go live on Wednesday 17th June and will be due on Tuesday 30th June. Your new assignments, Measuring angles and Area and perimeter, will go live on Wednesday 1st July and will be due on Tuesday 14th July.
RM EasiMaths: RM EasiMaths levels have been revised by teachers based on our Spring term assessment and teaching assessment based on usage and success within the app. So if you notice your weekly/overall time logged has changed or reset, that is what happens automatically when children are reassigned to a different level (Working Towards Year 5 level, Working At the Year 5 level, Working Above the Year 5 level, etc). This is a manual process that would have taken place at some point toward the end of this term, anyway.
English: To ensure that we cover all areas of English, we will post different activities each week, which will cover SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar), alongside weekly writing tasks. We will be asking the children to plan out their writing to help with their thinking, as we would do at school. This half term we will be starting a new text- The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins. All of our English learning (SPAG and writing) will be based around this new text :) This week we will be starting to plan a biography about Waterhouse Hawkins. We will plan and write a couple of each paragraphs each day.
UPDATE: When using a PowerPoint, please make sure you have pressed F5 or pressed the 'Start from the beginning' button as this will ensure you can make use of the interactive features within the PowerPoint.
Maths: This week will be be focusing on measuring, drawing and calculating angles. Each day you have a short video to watch and a task to complete. All of these videos can be found in the Summer Term – Week 10 (w/c 29th June) section at
https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/ and all of the tasks can be found below.

Reading: Each week will we focus on a different reading domain (enjoy, define, retrieve, summarise, infer, predict, relate, explore, compare). Alongside a weekly reading comprehension activity, we will provide a series of questions relevant to the domain and text chosen for that week's activity. Don't forget to read daily and record this progress in your reading records.
Context: Each week will be setting three context lessons.
Lesson 1: PSHE- WALT: Understand the the rules for road safety. This week we are going to create a poster or leaflet for children to explain rules around road safety.
Lesson 2: DT - WALT: Evaluate my Victorian room. We are going to look back at our planning, mood board, and final product and evaluate what we have made- use the questions to help you structure your evaluation.
